They Wheel Age 68 Disabled Man In Front Of ENTIRE Gym. But Who Joined Him Next Left Me Crying

High school students from Reading, Pennsylvania, went all out to show love and appreciation for their favorite supporter, 68-year-old Bobby Weitzel. Weitzel is a fixture at the school, his constant visibility an encouragement and comfort to decades of high school students.

Reading High School participated in a project called “Dude. Be Nice.” The project combines fashion with purpose, creating a culture that advocates kindness, inclusiveness and gratitude.

The student body couldn’t wait to surprise Bobby, the unsung hero of Reading High. Bobby was always ready with a hug or high-five, despite his struggle with physical and mental disabilities.

Bobby was born with cognitive deficiencies, and in 1977, suffered an injury that left his back broken in three places. His spirit, however, is nowhere near deficient.

Students describe Bobby as a “kid at heart,” and know that he volunteers because he loves them. Nobody is making him attend the school, Yet he’s been coming every day since 1969.

Students of Reading High made Bobby the king of the basketball court, honoring him with a slam dunk contest that of course, he won. The evening included gifts, Bobby’s favorite sandwich, and a plaque and banner that will be displayed at the high school for years to come.

The icing on the cake came when the students rushed out of the stands to receive a hug and high-five from their biggest fan. The smile on Bobby’s face says it all:

“They make me happy,” Bobby said. John Weitzel, Bobby’s brother, explained that Bobby’s whole life is dedicated to RHS. “He loves the kids; that’s his life,” he said.

The student body was eager to participate in the project, ready to shed their collective image as a rough, violent community.  “This is going to be something we do to show that we are a positive community, that we do positive things,” explained one student.

Congratulations to Bobby and the Reading High School student body. Your story deserves to be shared!
