Couple Karen and Ian who have ended up in many chaotic situations due to their triplets would reiterate the fact. Within a short time of getting married, Karen discovered that she was carrying three babies in her womb. The couple had least expected that they would become parents to triplets. The doctors told the newlyweds that the triplets had chances of suffocating within the womb of their mother and advised them to abort their children. However, Karen delivered the three babies without many complications. Little did they know that one of the biggest challenges in parenting was yet to arrive. A medical check-up revealed that this woman, Karen Gilbert was carrying three children in her womb, leaving her shocked. She was told that a single egg paved way for all three fetuses.

It was found that all the babies were dependent on a single Placenta, raising concerns about the chances of their survival. The medics even suggested that the couple abort the children, worrying about a condition called twin-to-twin syndrome, but Karen and her husband Ian decided to go against the doctor’s words.

All went well and in 2013 the couple became proud parents to triplets, who were named Ffion, Maddison and Paige.

The trio looks so identical that identifying them at times would be quite difficult. Their parents would often be confused as to who among the three requires a diaper change and which one needs to be fed.

To differentiate their triplets, parents Karen and Ian thought of coloring their kids’ toenails. The colors chosen for the task corresponded to the first letters of their names. To be precise, Mint Green for Maddison’s toe, Purple for Paige’s and Fuschia for Fion’s.

It is said that the color codes helped to a great extent in easing the confusion caused in identifying the twins. The couple’s older daughter Faye readily assists in coloring the nails of the tiny tots.

According to Karen, the idea of a color code mushroomed after she came across a story on the internet about another couple who also were parents to triplets. This couple about whom she happened to read about even renamed their kids to avoid confusion.

The triplets have also been spotted in sneakers of the colors assigned to them, which makes it easier for their parents to identify them.
