The nurses can’t stop him and it’s only when he begins to bleed that he stops wagging his tail

Animal rights activists in Brockton, Massachusetts were appalled: they had never before seen a dog in such wretched condition who was still alive. The animal had obviously been roaming the streets with open wounds. It took some time until allowed them to get close enough to be able to examine him. Only then did the full extent of the horror that this dog had gone through become apparent.

They washed the dog and his wounds. During the examination, they determined that he was probably about a year old. But he only weighed 15 lbs, dangerously little for an animal of his size. He must have really gone through something terrible and now just needed some love and proper food.

Initially, he was still very skeptical, but surprisingly became trusting quite quickly and just wanted to kiss his rescuers. This is why he is given the name, XO (hug and kiss). He quickly realized that he was now in a safe environment. He was so excited that he developed a condition called “Happy Tail” syndrome. This is where a dog wags its tail uncontrollably and can actually hurt itself in the process. He was so excited about being rescued that he wagged his tail so much that he ended up bleeding from it. After a while, carers also managed to get this back under control. XO eventually got taken to Second Chance Rescue where he is waiting to be adopted.

Alyssa Ellman, who works there, recalled, “At first I wanted to cry when I saw him. It broke my heart to see a little guy in such a state.” But XO is making great progress, the wounds are healing, he’s put on 13 lbs, and soon he’ll be adopted by a loving family. Even though he still carries a few traces of the past, you can clearly see that XO is one handsome little guy.

And he won’t be on his own anymore! His care mama takes him to the office, where he can sleep in a huge bed and get pampered and treats all day long. Just look at how happy he is in his slumber, he really is incredibly sweet! I hope he can soon forget what he’s been through.

XO was lucky to be rescued and brought back to good health. Hopefully, now he’ll finally be able to enjoy many more beautiful dreams! It’s hard to believe that someone once turned this little guy out on the streets.
