Cashier Notices Something “Off” About Shopper. Seconds Later, She Warns Her About INSANE Scam.

Those who prey on the elderly will stop at nothing to get what they want. Thanks to a clever cashier who went above and beyond her duties, a grandmother dodged a common scam that would’ve robbed her of thousands.

When an elderly woman walked up to Kroger cashier, Shelly Yost, demanding $2,000 worth of iTunes gift cards, it raised some big red flags. Through casual conversation, Yost tried to get the lady to tell her what the gift cards were for.

The grandmother revealed they were for her granddaughter who was in jail with a broken nose and needed to give them to the police in exchange for bail. Yost immediately recognized the story since grocery stores encounter these situations fairly often.

“She was vulnerable, and somebody was taking advantage of that,” said Yost. “I couldn’t feel okay with myself just saying ‘I’m doing my job and that’s it.’”

That’s when she told the woman that her granddaughter is okay and explained that this is a scam used to trick vulnerable seniors out of their money. But the woman refused to believe her, so Yost asked her if she could first verify the story with police.

Yost’s idea to stall the anxious grandmother was genius! While speaking to police, she also noticed that the woman had an assisted living key chain.

When police arrived they were able to convince her that her granddaughter was fine. “It just broke my heart,” said Yost. “She was so worried and so scared and I tried to comfort her and that’s all I could do.”

Yost’s hard work was rewarded the following day when two people from the living facility where the grandmother stays paid her a visit. “The next day, they showed up, and they were the most genuine people,” Yost said.

“They hugged me so tight and thanked me over and over. When I opened it later, there was a super-nice gift in there.”

It’s good to know there are truly good people out there like this cashier who go above the call of duty to help someone in need!
