This Elephant Lost Her Leg When She Was Just A Baby, But Her Doctor Did Something Amazing To Make Sure She Would Live!

Prostheses are a type of medical device too and they’re used to make up for a missing or amputated segment of leg. Now, when only the lower part of the leg is injured, it’s not necessary any longer to amputate the whole leg.

What they do instead is a partial amputation, which is called an elective level sub-total amputation. In many cases this is all that’s needed.

A veterinarian has to prescribe an orthosis or prosthesis once a thorough evaluation is given. The muscles, skeleton, and nerves are assessed as well as a gait analysis. Once the prescription has been made the prosthetic device is produced by a fabrication lab that specializes in veterinary orthotics and prosthetics.

The most important aspects of reaching the goal of getting an animal back on all four legs are fit and function!

Mosha the elephant wears an artificial leg. She’s the first elephant ever to do so. At the young age of two, she stepped on a land mine and lost her right front leg. So, orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Therdchair Jivacate, operated on Mosha and made her a new artificial leg. This artificial leg presented Mosha with a second chance at life.

Because Mosha was so young, she’s still growing. So her doctor had to make a new leg every year. Mosha grew very quickly and the artificial leg broke time and again.

Dr. Jivacate has been working with the world’s first elephant hospital, which is located in Thailand. There, he’s been able to help Mosha as well as other elephants who’ve been injured. Dr. Jivacate is the one who made the first prosthetic leg for animals.

Dr. Jivacate, says that there isn’t any doubt that the artificial leg is probably not that comfortable for Mosha, but she works very hard to use it anyway.

She’s a very good girl and she always enjoys seeing and working with the doctor. And what makes it all worth while to her is that after training she knows that she always get some special treats.
