Marine Biologist Are Completely Captivated By THIS Amazing Creature And It’s Easy To See Why!

Pyrosomes aren’t exactly a household word! But they are, in fact, just another reminder of how strange the ocean can be. These incredible creatures are called the unicorns of the sea and they’re very soft, almost like a feather boa.
Pyrosomes are normally found in tropical ocean waters. They’re tunicates that float freely near the top of the water column.

Each one of these pyrosomes is actually a colony of thousands of individual zooids. Each zooid is just a few millimeters in size.

Zooids are capable of cloning themselves to add to the total pyrosome and increase its overall length. Generally speaking, the larger the pyrosome, the older it is because of this cloning process.

Some pyrosomes grow to be about the size of a small whale, while others can be less than one centimeter long.

These creatures have remarkable bioluminescent properties, which are said to be much more intense and longer lasting than other bioluminescent species.

When asked to describe its brightness, biologist T.H. Huxley said this: I have just watched the moon set in all her glory, and looked at those lesser moons, the beautiful Pyrosoma, shining like white-hot cylinders in the water.
