With each passing day, violence against women is on the rise. It kills us to see women go through traumatizing experiences due to lack of adequate security measures. Even college campuses are not safe enough to give them a sense of comfort and security.

To make a case in point, The Boston Globe found that “forcible sex offences” at large university campuses went up by 40% between 2012 and 2013.

Luckily, Yasmin Mustafa designed a device that would come to women’s safety right when they need it.

Mustafa, along with Anthony Gold, started a company called ROAR with an objective to prevent violence against women.

“We developed Athena to help shift the focus from fear to empowerment,” said Mustafa. “It’s not a safety device; it’s a symbol of internalized confidence.”

One just has to long-press the button for 3 seconds to set off the alarm. A text message, with the person’s location, is sent to the loved ones automatically besides creating a one-touch call to the 911.

Apart from getting the woman’s location, the emergency contacts also get a one-click access to the 911 services.

“The stats are horrifying, and violence against women has been declared an epidemic. Sexual assaults, harassment, and inequality aren’t ‘women’s issues.’ They’re societal issues. And as a society, we need to ask ourselves, ‘Is this the best we can do?’” Yasmin noted.

“When it came time to select the name… Athena was a no-brainer.” “After all, he said, Athena was “the Greek goddess of courage, wisdom, and strength.”

The device measures up to the size of a coin.
