Bullies Throw Deaf Student’s Backpack In A Toilet, Then Mom Pulls Him Out Of School

This is disturbing. Omaha, Nebraska student, Alex Hernandez has been deaf since he was one years old. Due to his cochlear implant and surgery scars, he’s been bullied his whole life. However, one traumatic incident at Burke High School has the whole community outraged.

Hernandez noticed his backpack with his tablet, homework, cochlear implant battery, money, and school supplies were taken. When teachers reviewed security footage they discovered two teen boys stealing it and dumping it into a toilet.

“Those students think it’s OK to bully a deaf student, but it’s not. It’s not OK to bully someone who is disabled, deaf or hard of hearing,” Hernandez said. “Or anyone for that matter.”

The image of his backpack in the toilet quickly went viral and something amazing happened. There were more people, all of the world, both hard of hearing and hearing who showed their support to Hernandez. They even created a GoFundMe page to get him new school supplies.

“I wanted to thank all of my friends and those who wrote me for supporting me. I am very happy. It made me feel like I am not alone,” says Hernandez. “They said [they] were here supporting me and they know how it feels like to be deaf. So I’m very happy.”

Nevertheless, Hernandez and his mom have made a difficult decision. They decided it was best that Hernandez transfer to Ralston High School. The high school senior no longer feels safe. What he does know is that there are plenty of people out there who support him, they just don’t go to his current school.

“I have friends who are hard of hearing that go there and they say it’s good. They get a lot of support and they don’t get bullied,” Hernandez said of his new school.

The school is investigating the situation but Hernandez and his mother believe sharing their story is the only way to prevent it from happening to someone else.

“Today was my kid — tomorrow will be somebody else’s,” his mother said.
